OUR History

Welcome to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church! “The Place”, we are elated that you took the time to visit our website. We thank God for the work that He is doing at “The Place” now but we are cognizant of the sacrifices and contributions made by others before us that allow us to continue this work today. Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church began its work during the early 30’s under the leadership of the late Rev. Steward. From the late 30’s to 1968, Mt. Calvary was blessed with four leaders: Rev. Steward, Rev. Dancy, Rev. Washington, and Rev. Mason. The church was also relocated from its original location in the, “Baytown Woods,” to its current location in the Central Heights Community.

In 1968 Rev. Willie B. Ridgell became pastor of the church. Under Pastor Ridgell’s leadership and guidance Mt. Calvary grew in membership, in spirituality, and in prestige. Mt. Calvary became a beacon of light, a place of refuge and hope for all individuals who were looking for God to do something marvelous in their lives. Mt. Calvary was a change agent, helping all those who were a part of the ministry to see themselves as God created them to be. After 43 years of dedicated service, God called Pastor Ridgell home from his labor to his rest, in August of 2010.

In January 2011, the Lord sent Rev. Raphael D. Montgomery, a lifelong member of Mt. Calvary, back home to take the reigns as the Pastor. Pastor Montgomery brings an extensive educational background from Fisk University and Vanderbilt Divinity school that allows him to expound on the word of God in a contemporary fashion that all people can understand. Under his leadership the church has grown and ministries are being birthed. The mission of the church is to be a church that proclaims the Gospel, professes the faith and propels the people. With the help of God and the faith of God’s people Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church will continue to be “The Place”!
